History
College English Teaching Department of Xiangtan University, which was established in 1977 and called as the Public English Teaching and Research Office of College Languages and Literature Department. In 1981, it was subordinate to Foreign Languages Department and the appellation was changed to the College English Teaching and Research Office . In 1998, it was subordinate to Foreign Languages College and reorganized into the First Department and the Second Department of College English. Separated from the College in January 2004, it becomes College English Teaching Department, an independent secondary teaching unit of Xiangtan University.
Organization and Structure
College English Teaching Department is composed of three teaching branches, a training center for English competition, and a center for audiovisual teaching. It currently has a faculty of 73 teaching staff, including 64 full-time teachers, 6 tutors and 3 administrators.
Teaching Staff
College English Teaching Department owns a young and energetic teaching group with an average age of 32, among whom there are 14 professors and associate professors, 29 lecturers, 21 assistants (70.31% of the entire group hold a master’s degree). The Department is also possessed of one Prominent Teacher of Hunan, one Advanced Educational Worker of Hunan, and six Outstanding Teachers of Xiangtan University. It is in charge of English courses for all the non-English major students, including undergraduates and graduates, and enjoys a favorable reputation among the students.
Scientific Research
From 2002 to 2007, the Department has successively undertaken 72 scientific research programs. 3 projects are sponsored by the State Fund, and 34 projects are by the Provincial Fund. 1 achievement of teaching is awarded the first prize by the state; 2 and 4 achievements of teaching are awarded the first prize and the third prize respectively by Hunan Province. 118 academic papers and 5 academic works or textbooks have been published in recent three years.
College English Course Construction
College English Teaching Department takes college English teaching for non-English majors as its mission, with adherence to the student-oriented teaching concept. All the teachers devotes themselves to teaching language and cultivating students, and take an active role in the college English teaching reform. They make every effort to improve teaching quality and strengthen college English course construction. In 2007, the course of College English was authorized by the Ministry of Education of China for the National Excellent Course.
